About This Site

This website is designed to assist newcomers in Korea as they navigate a country that can initially seem overwhelming. Living in Korea differs greatly from just visiting. After spending 22 years in America, I returned to Korea and found it challenging to readjust to the changes in my homeland. Even as a Korean, I felt like a stranger in my home country, constantly researching and relearning aspects that were once familiar.

My inspiration for creating this site came from an encounter with a young American soldier. During a recent visit, a young white man sat beside me, struggling to understand my English accent. He had little knowledge of Korean culture and had just been stationed in northern Seoul after completing boot camp. I felt a mix of empathy and appreciation for his service to my homeland. Unlike young Korean men who are required to serve, he had volunteered to leave his home and family to be here. I wished for his safety and hoped he would find joy during his time in Korea.

I have also witnessed the challenges faced by young English teachers, many of whom struggle to advance in their careers and adapt to life here. At a recent meeting organized by the ambassador’s administration, I saw their frustration and the obstacles they encounter. It reminded me of the homesickness and confusion I experienced when I first moved to the U.S. as an immigrant.

While I have spent years in both countries, my experiences are somewhat limited. I lived in Georgia, Atlanta, and I am currently based in Daegu, Korea. I don’t claim to know all there is about American culture or Korean life, as both are incredibly diverse and nuanced beyond my personal experiences. However, this site is my attempt to share the insights and resources I’ve gathered to assist others who may feel lost or overwhelmed in their new environment.

Whether you are here for work, study, or military service, adjusting to a new culture can be intimidating. I aim to share the practical advice and resources that have helped me, hoping to ease this transition for others. While there are resources available on YouTube and Reddit, I believe that firsthand experiences can offer more practical guidance. Whether it involves understanding daily life, knowing where to shop, or navigating cultural nuances, this site strives to be a valuable resource for anyone starting their journey in Korea.

Through this platform, I hope to provide support and information that will help newcomers feel more at home in Korea and fully enjoy their time here.
